Nearly nine out of ten (88% (87.1%, 89.6%)) households in Simcoe Muskoka are completely free of secondhand smoke according to the 2017-2018 Rapid Risk Factor Surveillance System (RRFSS). Among households with children less than ten years of age, the per cent of smoke-free homes improves to 96% (92.5%, 97.6%).

The per cent of smoke-free homes in Simcoe Muskoka increased significantly among households with higher levels of income. For the survey years from 2013 to 2017 (combined), 77% (73.2%, 81.0%) of households in the lowest or lower middle income categories reported that their home is completely free of secondhand smoke, which was significantly lower than the 92% (89.8%, 93.0%) of households in the highest income category that are completely smoke-free.

The per cent of smoke-free homes in Simcoe Muskoka is significantly lower among households that rent their dwelling and amongthose that live in multi-unit dwellings. Based on 2017 and 2018 survey data, 82% (77.5%, 85.7%) of households where the residents rented their dwelling reported that their home is completely free of secondhand smoke, which was significantly lower than the 89% (88.0%, 90.7%) of smoke-free households where the residents owned their dwelling. Smoke-free homes were also significantly lower among households residing in multi-unit dwellings (residential structures with shared walls or living spaces), 84% (80.5%, 87.3%) of multi-unit dwellings are 100 per cent smoke-free compared with 89% (87.9%, 90.6%) of detached dwellings.
