According to the 2015-2016 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) conducted by Statistics Canada, 21% (17.8%, 25.3%) of Simcoe Muskoka residents (15-64 years) reported having had their first sexual intercourse before the age of 16. This was significantly higher than the comparable provincial average, where 17% (15.8%, 17.6%) of the Ontario population (15-64 years) reporting having had their first sexual intercourse before the age of 16.

By Age

First having sexual intercourse before the age of 16 years decreases with older age groups. In Simcoe Muskoka for the 2015-2016 survey period, 30%* (17.9%, 44.7%) of youth and young adults (15-24 years) reported first having had sexual intercourse before the age of 16 compared with 20% (15.0%, 25.6%) of adults (45-64 years). A similar pattern was observed for the province as a whole.

By Sex

First having sexual intercourse before the age of 16 years is more commonly reported among males compared with females. In 2015-2016 among Simcoe Muskoka males (15-64 years), 26% (19.0%, 33.6%) reported having had their first sexual intercourse before the age of 16 compared with 17% (13.1%, 22.6%) of females. A similar pattern was observed for the province as a whole.

By Education and Income

First having sexual intercourse before the age of 16 years is also associated with lower levels of education and income. In Simcoe Muskoka for the 2015-2016 survey period, 28% (20.6%, 36.6%) of adults (25-64 years) with less than a high school education reported first having had sexual intercourse before the age of 16, which was significantly higher than the 12%* (7.2%, 20.0%) of adults (25-64 years) with a University degree or higher. First having sexual intercourse before the age of 16 years also decreases with higher levels of household income. (NB: *Interpret with caution, high statistical variability.)
