Maintaining good oral health is important for overall health throughout the lifespan.  To learn more about decay, prevention and the health unit's dental program, please visit health facts on the health unit's website and look for dental health.  According to the 2012 Rapid Risk Factor Surveillance System (RRFSS), 27% (23.5, 29.6%) of Simcoe Muskoka residents (18+) reported they had teeth missing due to tooth decay (cavities) or gum disease.

By Age

The proportion of the population reporting missing teeth due to decay or gum disease increases significantly with age. In Simcoe Muskoka from in 2012, 54.1% (48.0, 60.1%) of seniors (65+) reported missing at least one tooth due to tooth decay or gum disease, which was significantly higher than those in the two younger age groups (18-44 and 45-64).

By Education

The proportion of adults missing teeth due to decay or gum disease decreases with education. In Simcoe Muskoka in 2012, 19.8% (16.5, 23.2%) of adults (18 years and older) with a high school education or less were missing teeth due to decay or gum disease, which is significantly lower than the 48% (34.1, 62.6%) of those with a University Degree or higher.

By Income

The proportion of adults missing teeth due to decay or gum disease also decreases with income. In Simcoe Muskoka in 2012, 43.3% (33.4, 53.2%) of residents (18 years and older) living in the lowest and lower middle income ">levels had teeth missing due to decay or gum disease, which is significantly higher than the 20.7% (15.8, 25.6%) of those living in the highest income level.
