Leading Causes of Illness and Death

Ranking causes of illness (morbidity) and death (mortality) is a common way of presenting health statistics and is a useful tool for illustrating the most frequently occurring causes of illness and death relative to other causes.

Since various methods exist for grouping and ranking causes of illness and death, the leading causes presented on HealthSTATS may differ from lists presented elsewhere. The Tenth Revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems is used to group and report death (ICD-10) and hospital (ICD-10 CA) data. The Third Edition of the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O-3) is used for cancer incidence data.
