Summary:

  • Approximately 6% of COVID-19 cases have been hospitalized.3% of COVID-19 cases have unfortunately passed away.
  • Almost 80% of hospitalized COVID-19 cases have recovered.This excludes cases currently in hospital.
  • Over half of deaths were never hospitalized.This is because of the disproportionately large impact of COVID-19 mortality on LTC and Retirement Home residents who have passed away without requiring hospitalization.
  • A higher proportion of cases are requiring hospitalization and ICU care in the second wave of the pandemic (fall 2020 onward), when compared to the first wave.

Note: COVID-19 hospitalization numbers represent individuals who reside in Simcoe Muskoka, including those hospitalized at local hospitals and at hospitals outside of the region, who are being managed and investigated by Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. Due to limitations in reporting, COVID-19 patients residing and hospitalized outside of Simcoe Muskoka but who have been transferred to a local hospital due to over-capacity in GTA hospitals are excluded from this analysis if they are not investigated by our health unit.
