According to the 2015-2016 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) conducted by Statistics Canada, 41% (36.9%, 45.6%) of Simcoe Muskoka residents (12+) reported having had a sunburn in the previous twelve months. This was significantly higher than the comparable provincial average, where 32% (30.7%, 32.5%) of the Ontario population (12+) reporting having had a sunburn in the previous twelve months.
By Age
Self-reported sunburn in the previous twelve months decreases significantly with age. In Simcoe Muskoka for the 2015-2016 survey period, 15% (9.2%, 22.6%) of seniors reported having had a sunburn in the previous twelve months, which was significantly lower than any other age group. During the same time period, 62% (50.4%, 71.8%) of youth (12-19 years) and 54% (45.6%, 62.2%) of younger adults (20 to 44 years) reported having had a sunburn in the previous twelve months. Self-reported sunburn in the previous twelve months among youth (12-19 years) and younger adults (20 to 44 years) in Simcoe Muskoka were significantly higher than the comparable provincial averages.

By Sex
Self-reported sunburn in Simcoe Muskoka was similar for males and females in 2015-2016, with 45% (39.3%, 50.4%) of males and 38% (33.0%, 42.9%) of females reporting having had a sunburn in the previous twelve months. These were significantly higher than the comparable provincial averages for both males and females.
By Education and Income
Self-reported sunburn increases with higher levels of education. In Simcoe Muskoka for the 2015-2016 survey period, 59% (48.0%, 68.8%) of adults (25-64 years) with a University Degree or higher reported having had a sunburn in the previous twelve months, which was significantly higher than the 35% (26.6%, 43.5%) of adults (25-64 years) with less than a high school education.

Self-reported sunburn also increases with higher levels of household income; however, this pattern is more pronounced at the provincial level when compared with what was observed among Simcoe Muskoka residents. For the 2015-2016 survey period, 36% (26.7%, 46.2%) of Simcoe Muskoka residents (12 years and older) living in the lowest income quintile reported having had a sunburn in the previous twelve months, which was significantly higher than the comparable provincial average of 22% (20.5%, 24.2%) of Ontario residents (12+) in the lowest income quintile. For the same time period, 47% (39.6%, 55.2%) of Simcoe Muskoka residents living in the highest income quintile reported having had a sunburn in the previous twelve months, which was similar to the comparable provincial average.
