According to the 2015-2016 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) conducted by Statistics Canada, 71% (66.9%, 75.5%) of Simcoe Muskoka residents (12+) reported protecting themselves appropriately from the sun by following the recommendations from the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer (CPAC). This was nearly identical to the comparable provincial average, where 72% (71.1%, 72.9%) of the Ontario population (12+) reported protecting themselves appropriately from the sun by following the CPAC recommendations. The CPAC recommendations are to: either spend fewer than 30 minutes in the sun during peak hours OR spend 30 minutes or more in the sun AND always or often do at least one of the following: seeking shade and avoid the sun OR wearing protective clothing and a hat OR wearing sunscreen SPF≥15 on face and body.

By Age
In Simcoe Muskoka for the 2015-2016 survey period, 85% (78.2%, 89.8%) of seniors (65+) reported appropriately protecting themselves from the sun by following CPAC recommendations, which was significantly higher than younger adults (20-44 years) and youth (12-19 years).

By Sex
Significantly more females in Simcoe Muskoka reported appropriately protecting themselves from the sun when compared with males. In 2015-2016, 79% (73.8%, 82.8%) of females reported following the CPAC recommendations for protection from the sun compared with 64% (56.2%, 70.5%) of males. These were not significantly different from the comparable provincial averages for either males or females.

By Education and Income
Appropriately protecting oneself from the sun by following the CPAC recommendations is not significantly related to either education or income. This observation is consistent both locally and for the province as a whole.
