Tobacco Control
Minors’ Access to Tobacco In 2011, there were close to 900 compliance and enforcement inspections of tobacco retailers in Simcoe Muskoka where under-aged test shoppers attempted to buy cigarettes. About one-in-ten sold tobacco to these under-aged test shoppers. Under the Smoke-Free Ontario Act (SFOA) it is illegal to sell or supply tobacco to anyone under the age of 19 years. Support for Smoke-free Outdoor Public Places The large majority of Simcoe Muskoka adults (18+ years) support banning smoking in outdoor public places such as playgrounds, doorways, sports fields and restaurant patios. Support for Smoke-free Multi-Unit Dwellings Multi-unit dwellings are residential buildings with shared walls or living spaces, including apartment buildings, condos, townhouses, and seniors or retirement homes. In 2011, nearly two-thirds of Simcoe Muskoka residents would support banning smoking anywhere inside a multi-unit dwelling and one-quarter would also support banning smoking on the property outside the residence.
