Youth Sexual Activity
According to the Canadian Community Health Survey (2003 – 2007/08), 50% (43.7%, 56.2%) of Simcoe Muskoka teens (15-19 years) reported having had sexual intercourse at least once. This was significantly higher than the 36% (34.8%, 37.7%) reported by Ontario teens (15-19 years) during the same survey years. Among sexually active Simcoe Muskoka teens (15-19 years), 45% (36.2%, 53.8%) said they were 16 years or younger when they first had sexual intercourse. This was slightly higher than what was reported by Ontario teens (15-19 years) but this difference was not statistically significant; where 37% (34.6%, 39.3%) reported having first had sex at 16 years or younger. Also among sexually active Simcoe Muskoka teens (15-19 years), 36% (27.2%, 44.8%) reported having had more than one sexual partner in the past 12 months. This was similar to what was reported by Ontario teens (15-19 years); where 34% (31.6%, 36.2%) reported having more than one sexual partner in the past 12 months.
