Crude Birth Rate

The crude birth rate is the number of live births per 1,000 people in the population per year. This rate depends on a number of factors including the percentage of women in their reproductive years.  For example, one population may have a higher crude birth rate than another population simply because there is a higher percentage of women in their reproductive years.  These data come from the Population Estimates and Vital Statistics. 

Figure 1 below shows the crude birth rate in Simcoe Muskoka and Ontario from 1986 to 2006.  The rate in Simcoe Muskoka is lower than that of Ontario, which may be because there is a lower percentage of women in their reproductive years in Simcoe Muskoka compared to Ontario. The birth rate in both Ontario and Simcoe Muskoka has been decreasing since the early 1990’s.
