Cycling Injuries

From 2003-07, there were 428 Emergency Room (ER) visits for cycling injuries in Simcoe Muskoka residents.  Males make up more than three-quarters (78%) of the ER visits; 60% of visits were residents between 10 and 24 years. The Simcoe Muskoka ER visit rate was significantly lower compared to Ontario. The ER data come from the National Ambulatory Care Reporting System (NACRS).

Between 2003-07, there were 41 hospitalizations for cycling injuries in Simcoe Muskoka residents. Males account for 85% of hospitalizations; 51% of  hospitalizations occurred among children between the ages of one and 19 years.  The Simcoe Muskoka rate was similar to the provincial rate. The hospitalization data come from the Discharage Abstract Database (DAD).

Between 2000-04, five residents, all male, died as a result of a collision with a motor vehicle. During the same time period, 91 cyclists died across Ontario. The death data come from the Vital Statistics database for Ontario.
