Diseases of the circulatory system, including stroke, were the leading cause of hospitalizations in Simcoe Muskoka for the eight year period between 2003 and 2010. Stroke accounted for 10 per cent of all circulatory system disease related hospitalizations during the same time period. 

 

The age-standardized hospitalization rate for stroke in Simcoe Muskoka for all ages and sexes in 2010 was 77.7 (71.2, 84.1) per 100,000 population, which was not significantly different than the Ontario rate of 82.2 (80.8, 83.5) per 100,000 population. 

 

Figure one shows the trend in stroke hospitalizations rates for Simcoe Muskoka and Ontario over the eight year period between 2003 and 2010. The rates in both Simcoe Muskoka and Ontario display a significant downward trend over this time span; decreasing at an average of five per cent (-7.2%,-1.8%) per year in Simcoe Muskoka and three per cent (-3.7%,-2.9%) per year in Ontario.

In 2010, the age-standardized stroke hospitalization rate among Simcoe Muskoka males and females in was 86.8 (76.8, 96.9) per 100,000, which was significantly higher than the female rate of 70.3 (61.8, 78.9) per 100,000. The stroke hospitalization rate for Ontario males and females was not significantly different from the rates in Simcoe Muskoka in 2010.  

 

Figure two shows the trend in stroke hospitalization rates for males and females in Simcoe Muskoka over the eight year period between 2003 and 2010. The stroke rate among Simcoe Muskoka males has been consistently above that of females over this time span.

Hospitalizations for stroke increases with age (see figure three). The age-specific rate for stroke hospitalizations between 2003 and 2010 (combined) in Simcoe Muskoka was highest among those 75 years and older at 1,012.2 (973.7, 1,050.7) hospital discharges per 100,000 populations.
