Asthma Hospitalizations
Overall By Sex By Age Group Overall The age-standardized hospitalization rate for asthma in Simcoe Muskoka for all ages and sexes in 2009 was 41.1 (35.0, 47.2) per 100,000 population, which was not significantly different from the Ontario rate of 46.8 (45.5, 48.0) per 100,000 population. Figure one shows the trend in asthma hospitalization rates for Simcoe Muskoka and Ontario over the seven year period between 2003 and 2009. There has been a downward trend in asthma hospitalization rates in both Simcoe Muskoka and Ontario since 2005, with the steepest drop occurring between 2005 and 2007. Figure One By Sex In 2009, the age-standardized hospitalization rate for asthma among Simcoe Muskoka males was 39.8 (31.2, 48.5) per 100,000, which was not significantly different than the female rate of 41.8 (33.4, 50.3) per 100,000. These rates were not significantly different from the 2009 Ontario rates for either males or females. Figure two shows the trend in asthma hospitalizations for males and females in Simcoe Muskoka between 2003 and 2009. Both males and females follow a downward trend in asthma hospitalization between 2005 and 2009. Figure Two By Age Group Hospitalizations for asthma are most common among children under 10 years of age. The age-specific rate of asthma hospitalizations between 2003 and 2009 (combined) in Simcoe Muskoka was highest among infants less than one year of age at 272.4 (217.0, 327.8) per 100,000 and children between one and nine years of age at 233.1 (217.2, 249.1) per 100,000. These rates were more than five times the rate for any other age grouping during this same period of time (see figure three). Figure Three In Simcoe Muskoka, between 2003 and 2009 (combined), asthma was responsible for more than 800 hospitalizations among children one to nine years of age and was one of the leading causes of hospitalizations for children of this age grouping. However, the trend in asthma related hospitalizations for children between one and nine years of age has been declining since 2005 in both Simcoe Muskoka and Ontario (see figure four). In 2009, the hospitalization rate for asthma among children (1-9 year) in Simcoe Muskoka was 128.9 (97.1, 160.8) per 100,000, which was significantly lower than the Ontario rate of 197.8 (190.1, 205.4) per 100,000.
